GREEK TYPEFACES

No printer is great if it does not print in Greek. Without this effort it is impossible to serve Humanism. Because Humanism has two sources: Athens and Florence. Without these two corners of the world, it is not entirely certain that man would be able to get civilized, becoming a being able to oppose the immense power of individuality to mass action […] (Jean Zafiropulo, The Pre-Socratic Philosophers and Athens's Humanism, Tallone Editore).

First in Paris during the 1950s, then in Alpignano between 1991 and 2006, the Tallone Press printed the works by Empedocles, Melissos, Parmenides, Zeno, Pythagoras, Diogenes and Anaxagoras. All of them were typeset by hand in uppercase and lowercase Greek, cast by Deberny (cf. tallone a., Manuale Tipografico II, plates X-XI).

CARATTERI GRECI

«Nessuno stampatore è grande, se non ha stampato del greco. Tallone lo sa meglio di chiunque. Senza questo sforzo è impossibile servire l'umanesimo, come il suo ideale glielo impone. Poiché l'umanesimo ha due sorgenti: Atene e Firenze. Senza questi due angoli del mondo non è del tutto certo che l'uomo sarebbe riuscito a sbestializzarsi, a diventare un essere capace di opporre l'immensa forza dell'individualità all'azione di massa […]» (Jean Zafiropulo, I Filosofi greci presocratici e l'Umanesimo ad Atene, Tallone Editore). Utilizzando i caratteri greci maiuscoli e minuscoli della Fonderia Deberny (cfr. tallone a., Manuale Tipografico II, tavole 10-11), l'Editore Tallone ha composto a mano e pubblicato la Collana dei Filosofi Greci Presocratici (Empedocle, Melisso, Parmenide, Zenone, Pitagora, Diogene e Anassagora), sia a Parigi con la traduzione francese, sia ad Alpignano con la traduzione italiana.
