TALLONES' TYPOGRAPHIC AESTHETICS

The son of a renowned painter, Cesare Tallone, and the poetess Eleonora Tango, Alberto grew up in a fervent artistic environment. Alberto Tallone inaugurated a new path into the aesthetics of 20th-century fine books, elaborating slender pages illustrated exclusively by types, in sharp contrast with the imposing rationalist perspectives of illustrated and decorated books which favoured images over texts, reduced to a pretext. When founding his press, Alberto Tallone aimed to give a physical shape to human thought. He wanted to select the perfect typeface for each literary masterpiece and to arrange it on the page in the most appropriate way for those who were going to read it. He thought that format, layout, type of paper and ink, binding colour etc. all contributed to “illustrate” a text (Chiara Nicolini, Form and Function, Illustration, 48, London, 2016).

ESTETICA TIPOGRAFICA TALLONIANA

Figlio del pittore Cesare Tallone e della nobildonna Eleonora Tango, Alberto crebbe in un fervido ambiente artistico. Seppe aprire una nuova via all'estetica del libro di cultura del Novecento, elaborando pagine illustrate dai soli caratteri entro formati estremamente slanciati, in controtendenza con lo stile allora imperante, vocato alle prospettive razionaliste e alla moda del libro illustrato e decorato che, privilegiando le immagini, aveva ridotto il testo a pretesto e la tipografia a riempitivo. Decise così di trasferire al libro il proprio gusto per la ‘tipografia pura’, secondo cui la bellezza delle pagine stampate nasce dalla disposizione dei neri e dei bianchi, dalle proporzioni dei margini e degli spazi pneumatici, dalla disposizione e dalla scelta dei caratteri, considerati la migliore illustrazione del libro in accordo con la lezione del sommo Bodoni.
